Scriptures:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 (NKJV)

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
— James 1:2–3 (NKJV)

Hot Springs National Park was almost left out of my blog. If I’m being honest, Hot Springs didn’t go as I had hoped. The skies were gray, another thunderstorm beat me down, and the landscapes felt underwhelming compared to the dramatic cliffs and waterfalls I have been seeking on this journey. This is a great place for many people, but not really my cup of tea. I’ll take a latte please!

The photos displayed on Google didn’t seem to match what I was seeing. The hot springs were fascinating, but the views I had been seeking fell short. I did try to beat out the welders and keep my hands in the hot spring water for longer than them, but alas they still hold the record at 7 seconds if my memory holds.

Despite all this, one thing stood out: rest.

Lining the main road were historic bathhouses—reminders that people had long come to these waters for healing. The springs bubble up from deep within the earth, offering warmth and restoration. And in the rhythm of the rain and the stillness of that small town, I heard a quiet call: Slow down.

At first, I sat at camp none too happy about this slowdown. I was growing weary of the rain that had followed me since Shenandoah. But as I listened to the rain hit my tent, the rhythm began to calm me. It was gentle and soothing, and I felt God reminding me to be still (Psalm 46:10). That’s when I embraced this time and counted it joy, even though it hadn’t looked like a gift at first.

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” (James 1:2–3)

This wasn’t the day for hiking. It wasn’t the place for conquering fears or chasing mountaintops. I had already done that—hiked down waterfalls, zipped down a mountain, and delved into the earth through narrow, winding cave passages. Maybe now… it was time to rest.

Maybe this stop was divinely appointed. Not for the scenery, but for the pause. Not for the thrill, but for the stillness.

In the hush of the rain, I realized—I needed this too. My soul and body needed a place where it could be restored. A place where the only thing required was to sit, breathe, and receive.

Reflection Question:

Have you ever been disappointed by where God led you, only to later realize He brought you there for rest, not results?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, I confess that sometimes I chase the spectacular and overlook the simple. Thank You for the gentle reminder that You care just as much about my rest as my progress. Help me to receive the gift of stillness and to trust that even the quiet, rainy days are part of Your perfect plan. Slow me down when I need it, and restore me in Your presence.
Amen.
