In the words of The Hobbit,
“Mr Bilbo, where are you off too?”
“Can’t stop, I’m already late!”
“Late for what?”
“I’m going on an adventure!”
So you might wonder what would cause us to sell our 3 bedroom home on almost an acre of land on an island. It would appear that we are living the American Dream. And, that’s true. We did everything society said we were supposed to. We bought into this idea that there is still an “American Dream”. What we realized is that there is no one dream that all American’s are supposed to strive for.
Let’s be realistic. These days the American Dream comes with such a huge price tag that it is near impossible for anyone to achieve it. We work near constantly to pay the mortgage, utilities, food, and everything else. Work so much that you have no time to enjoy what you are paying for. Can’t go to the beach because it costs so much to live. You work, come home, eat, sleep, and repeat.
Ryan and I decided, after 26 years together and raising 4 children, that it was not for us any longer. We could have continued in our big home, but we chose to take the risk of going after a dream we’ve talked about for years. It’s not that we don’t want a home, but that we want to achieve it without becoming a slave to the economic system our government and society have created. And that means selling, taking a step back, living in a RV temporarily, then finding land and building our forever home.
We want a life that gives us the freedom to chase our dreams. Be able to have acreage and a homestead. Feel safe in what is going into our bodies by raising and growing our own food. Step away from the idea that happiness is getting that next thing that the TV or social media says we need. Step back in time a little, and live closer to nature. Be able to take time off to travel and see our children.
So that is why we have finally taken the first steps to our new adventure. The house is sold and we are chilling in our camper. The kids have their own places and are creating their lives. Some plan to join us on the homestead in the future. While the others will always know they have a place to land when they want to. They too will have the option to not get sucked into the “live in debt and work yourself to death” American Dream.
We’ve said our goodbyes to the old, and now welcome the new.
